Ask Italian New Spring Menu 2018 | BH2, Bournemouth

ASK Italian is one of the UK's leading restaurant brands. We recently got a beautiful new one in the BH2 area of Bournemouth, and it's easily one of the nicest for decor and location. With outside seating when the weather is nice, easy car parking and plenty of tables, it's a great after-work dinner location or date night. Benji and I were very kindly invited down to try the new Spring Menu, including a range of lighter pizzas; with three to choose from, Prima pizza toppings are now served on the new Prima Light base and accompanied by a colourful, veggie-packed rainbow salad. Here's what we had and thought!

Firstly, the menu is full of great options. I was really surprised with the choice of starters - there are sharers, breads, nibbles and then bigger starter options for people like us. ASK Italian has topped up their drinks menu with the classic Negroni cocktail joining their popular tipples, such as the Tropical Mojito and Elderflower G&T, and a growing range of craft beers and ciders. Obviously we had to try the Tropical Mojitos (£5.95), and they were perfect. Not too sickly and great to enjoy with our meal.

Food wise, I went for the new Garlic Bread with Balsamic Onions (£6.35) for starter, and Benji had the Meatballs Piccante (£6.50). I loved my starter, it was so tasty and a nice twist on a classic garlic bread. It was a lot bigger than I thought it would be, to be honest probably too big (Benji had to help me!), but I'd definitely want to order this again. The Meatballs were great, a nice bit of spice, plenty of mascarpone and served in a little circular dish.

For mains, I had to try the new Coppa Ham & Egg Pizza (£11.50), but opted for the Light version, served with a side salad. I'm a bit fussy with my salads and found it was a bit over-complicated for me personally, but the pizza was delicious. The right size if you struggle or feel overwhelmed with a whole pizza, and the parma ham on top was lovely and thin and crispy. Benji opted for the Pollo Piccante Con Pancetta (£12.95) with Chicken breast, roasted peppers, red chillies, mushrooms, spinach, rosemary and fontal cheese. He didn't quite finish it, and the lovely team boxed it up so he's having the leftovers for lunch today. Ideal.

Apart from the pizza, I was tempted but the new Spring Special Pea and Prosciutto Risotto. This vibrant pea and asparagus risotto is topped with crispy smoked prosciutto and baby watercress, and packs in all the flavour. One for next time!

We were absolutely stuffed and couldn't squeeze a dessert in, but the new White Chocolate Swirl looked amazing. It's certainly on my bucket list for next time!

I'm really focusing on my exercise and eating better, so it's really reassuring to know I can visit ASK Italian for a pizza that is less than 550 calories! Less dough, nice and light, and doesn't leave me feeling bloated and in a food-coma!
